Yesterday, some of WPLC staff had the pleasure of attending @hollywoodclimatesummit to see a screening of “Standing Above The Clouds” directed by Jalena Keane-Lee @jalena.kl.
The film tells the story of kiaʻi (protectors) in Hawaiʻi and around the world dedicated their lives to protecting the Sacred Mountain Mauna Kea from further destruction by a massive thirty meter telescope (TMT) is proposed to be built on the summit. Through the lens of mothers and daughters in three Native Hawaiian families, Standing Above The Clouds explores intergenerational healing and the impacts of safeguarding cultural traditions.
Standing Above the Clouds follows kumu (teacher) and community organizer Pua Case @puacase and her two daughters - artist-activists Hawane Rios hawanemusic and Kapulei Flores @kapuleifloress - who have been called to stop the TMT since 2010. Their lives quickly become consumed with frontline actions, court proceedings and immersed in ceremonies and cultural practices. As they face opposition and arrests, they are joined by a community who have dedicated their lives to protecting Mauna Kea.
We are grateful these stories are being told from our perspectives as Water Protectors, Mountain Protectors, Land Defenders, as kiaʻi. Our work carries love and struggle, just as shown in Standing Above The Clouds.
The work to protect Mauna Kea and sacred places is ongoing and your support is still needed. A’ole TMT today and always. Sign @mkea.info’s petition and get them to 500,000.
