Kūkulu Art Exhibition Hāmākua IV
Fourth post in series - Creation of Kūkulu
Introducing a series of photos and descriptions of the first Kūkulu Art Exhibition from the Hāmākua location as we continue to pay tribute to the pillars of Mauna Kea. These comments come directly from the video, ʻKūkulu Art exhibit opens During Festival (March 10, 2018)ʻ,Big Island Video News-29.18. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9s2Ews1mBw&t=20s
So when you come into the room, you look around. There is a Mauna in which we create such a piece so the first thing we do is create the triangle.
So if you lay the triangle this way, one corner of the triangle is Pu’uhuluhulu, the base of Mauna a Wākea where we hold our ceremonies. And today we are so blessed because at Pu’uhuluhulu is the pōhaku that went around the world for the Mālama Honua voyage of Hōkūle’a; from the top of Mauna Kea as a beacon it traveled around the world to guide the canoe on its journey and to bring the canoe back safely. And it is the one thing that has touched all of the earth. So it sits in its domain in what would be Pu’uhuluhulu.
The other corner is the foundation of us all, the Hale; the Pili. From this hale the thatching was brought from Ka’ūpulehu, from a hale pili that was built by Nā Kalai Wa’a; by the voyagers that sailed around the world. So we have brought the voyagers into the exhibit because we are mountain to ocean with no separation, and that reminds us. So we are at the second of the three in the triangle.
The point of the triangle is obvious. It is the mountain herself, and this is a view from the Hāmākua side because we are in the district of Hāmākua. So the pieces that were presented by the artists come from Waikoloa all the way to ʻOʻokala. Those are the districts of Kohala and the district of Hāmākua."
