Mauna Kea in the 1960s

Mauna Kea in the 1960s

I keep finding myself longing for a time I did not live in
A time before the telescopes
A time before the access road
A time before TMT
A time when the snow fell further down the mountain than it does now
A time when Waimea was still a small town
A time when the mornings were colder and the mist was thicker

I am grateful my Grandfather saw the mountain in this way
I am grateful my mother saw the mountain in this way
It is through their memories that live within me that I see the mountain in this way
And it is the very reason why I do everything I can alongside them so one day our descendants may look up at their mountain and see just the snow on her summit
